During the menopause, disturbed sleep and poor sleep quality can be a huge problem. Swinging oestrogen levels can cause night sweats, heat intolerance and insomnia.
Sleep issues are common, with sleep disorders affecting 39% to 47% of perimenopausal women and 35% to 60% of postmenopausal women.
The ovaries stop producing oestrogen and progesterone, which are both involved in processes that affect mood, appetite, sleep, sex drive, and more.
Oestrogen plays a role in the metabolism of serotonin and other neurotransmitters that affect our sleep-wake cycle. Oestrogen also helps keep our body temperature low at night, and therefore more conductive to restful sleep. Oestrogen also has an antidepressant effect, with less estrogen, women may experience higher body temperatures, lower quality sleep, and poorer mood.
